LSI awarded $43,692 grant from Quad Cities United Way

Davenport, Iowa - Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) was awarded a grant for $43,692 from United Way of the Quad Cities Area (UWQCA) to help launch a new program called Building Blocks. The program’s intent is to promote positive parent-child interaction to improve school readiness in the Scott County area. Building Blocks is an extension of the research-based HOPES (Healthy Opportunities for Parents to Experience Success) program.

Building Blocks will serve parents and caregivers who reside in Scott County with children ages 3 to 5 who have multiple risk factors interfering with school readiness. Parents will learn strategies for becoming involved in the school system and advocating for their child. Families will have the opportunity to work with their children in early learning experiences and recognize the importance of their involvement.

“Parents will become more aware of ways that they can help their child get ready for school through Building Blocks. The program also hopes to improve the parent knowledge of the educational system, services and supports available to families,” said Lynne Meeske, LSI early childhood program supervisor.

Goals of the program also include healthy growth and development, enhanced family functioning and school linkage to appropriate early intervention services. Home visiting will be the core of the program with parent and child activity groups provided on a monthly basis to enhance both child development and the parent’s awareness.

Assistance will be provided to families who qualify for services after completing a screening. Building Blocks hopes to serve approximately 18 families. Anyone can refer a family for this program by contacting LSI at 563-322-7419. The first in-home visits and group meetings will begin in December 2009.

LSI impacts the lives of tens of thousands of Iowans annually through residential treatment, services to families, home health care, early childhood programs, adoption/foster care services, refugee resettlement, services for people with disabilities, disaster response initiatives and Barnabas Uplift. LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
