LSI's Jones County early childhood programs get donation

A $1,000 donation from Orbis Corporation in Monticello, Iowa, will benefit children and families who partner with LSI's New Parent program and Parents as Teachers program in Jones County. The funds will be used for the program's necessity pantry, safety items assistance fund and group events.

"This is a significant contribution to our program, and we're excited that these funds will go toward client assistance and also providing support to our families through group events," said Lynette Otten, program supervisor. "Our ultimate goal is to empower families toward positive parenting and help reduce risk factors that could lead to child abuse."

LSI's New Parent and Parents as Teachers programs provide ongoing in-home visits to parents. The voluntary program gives parents an opportunity to learn about the developmental stages of their babies, learn new activities to engage their children and build positive attitudes toward parenting.

An LSI family support worker visits families in their home to teach parenting skills, such as how to positively interact with children, develop productive coping strategies and provide positive forms of discipline. Visits can be as often as weekly during an infant's first year and then decrease depending on an individual family's need.
