Emotional Intelligence in Parenting

What is emotional intelligence? Let’s work to enhance your emotional intelligence as we discuss the challenges of parenting our children in care. We will review the way in which parenting styles and practices impact children’s emotional intelligence in similar or different ways that they impact other developmental outcomes.
– Parental responsiveness
– Parental demandingness
– Exercises for self-management
– Exercises for social awareness
– Exercises for relationship management

Parental responsiveness, parental emotion-related coaching, and parental positive demandingness are related to children’s higher emotional intelligence, while parental negative demandingness is related to children’s lower emotional intelligence.

Social/emotional intervention programs can be used in improving children’s emotional skills. This is in addition to helping the child “fit in” in a society that expects people to be aware of their feelings and in proper control of their emotions, instead of allowing emotions to control them.
Curriculum:
– Parenting styles
– Emotional intelligence
– Parental demandingness
– Parental coaching

Course objectives: To give caregivers, social workers, and teachers:
– an understanding of emotions/feelings (or lack thereof) and how they can affect behaviors and physical health
– tools to understand our own emotions and those of others
– tools of support and treatment information

Instructor: Hector Villareal
