This training is based on the Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Model created by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross, Founders of the Empowered to Connect Conference.

Dr. Purvis coined the phrase “children from hard places” to describe children who have experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment and/or trauma in early development. Their survival behaviors can be confusing, frustrating, and difficult to manage even for the most patient and loving parents. We are excited to have access to the nearly 4-hour video featuring Drs. Purvis and Cross, coaching families in skills and strategies for applying TBRI Empowering, Connecting, and Correcting Principles to everyday life. Segments of this video will be used in our discussion and training to help our foster, adoptive, and relative families make the connections and build the trust needed to help children better manage their behaviors.

We will be using the Trust Based Parenting video:

A. Taking the “Bad” Out of Behavior: Understanding Your Child’s Actions (15 min video clip), plus discussion (10 min)

B. TBRI: The Building Blocks for Behavioral Change (14 min video), plus discussion – referencing Empowered to Connect material and understanding the importance of Connections, Repetition, Consistency, and Trust

C. TBRI Empowering Principles: Laying the Foundation for Change ( 29 min video), plus discussion and referencing situations/examples and importance of being consistent and present (10 min)

D. TBRI Connecting Principles: Building a Trusting Relationship (38 min)

BREAK – 10 min

Discussion of tools to use in building relationships:

  • Being mindful of our children’s past experiences – How to build connections is different for each child.
  • Ask Self: How am I contributing to what is going on in my home — Slow down — Mirror (self)
  • Whole CHILD — Connect – Safety – Relationship (10 min)
