This lecture will focus on the need and importance of recognizing and responding to human trafficking in a healthcare setting. Attendees will learn what human trafficking is, how to recognize it in their daily work, and what steps they may take if a situation of human trafficking is encountered.

At the completion of the conference, participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the definition(s) of human trafficking (both sex and labor).
2. Review the Federal definition (TVPA 2000)
3. Review the Iowa Code 710.A
4. Review what HT looks like in Iowa
5. Demonstrate the A-M-P model of HT
6. Explain importance of recognizing HT in a healthcare setting
7. Identify human trafficking indicators
8. Assess for behavioral indicators
9. Assess for physical indicators
10. Describe what healthcare professionals can do (“next steps”) in response to HT.

Instructor: Gretchen Brown-Waech

Gretchen Brown-Waech is the Victim Rights and Human Trafficking Coordinator with the Iowa Attorney General’s Crime Victims Assistance Division (CVAD). In her present role at CVAD, she collaborates with other statewide organizations to develop and implement best practices and policies for victims of human trafficking and other violent crimes. This includes conducting presentations to raise awareness among community members, as well as targeted training for medical, law enforcement, and victim services providers. In everything she does, she strives for equity and survivor-centered action. Gretchen has additional experience working with victims. She was the founding director of Deaf Iowans Against Abuse, serving deaf survivors of domestic and sexual violence statewide for 8 years.

This training has been approved for 4.5 hours of foster parent training credit.
