Why do so many youth in care lose connections with their siblings? Is there anything you can do to help them stay connected? And why is it such a big deal, anyway? This course will explore the profound impact of sibling relationships on young people in care and provide ideas resource parents can use to reconnect or strengthen a sibling bond.
Curriculum:
- Defining a sibling relationship
- Challenges to placing siblings together
- Placement outcomes
- Wellbeing outcomes that can arise from supporting sibling relationships or co-placements, including:
- Children who have positive relationships with their siblings are less likely to exhibit internalizing behaviors
- Placement with siblings or maintaining sibling connections while in care serves as a protective factor for children’s mental health
- Placement with all their siblings may improve children’s school performance
- Those placed together tend to show more closeness to their foster caregivers
- Siblings placed together are more likely to exit to adoption and guardianship than if they are placed apart
- Placements of all siblings together led to a lower risk of disruptions due to incompatibility between the child and caregiver or child-initiated disruptions
- Wellbeing outcomes that can arise from supporting sibling relationships or co-placements, including:
- Practices to maintain sibling connections
- Strategies that support placing siblings together
- Strategies for preserving ties when siblings are separated

This training has been approved for 3 hours of foster parent training credit.
