This is a program for adoptive parents and school-aged children to learn how to answer questions about their adoption story. Your story is unique, personal, and YOURS to share (or not). When it comes to handling questions and comments about adoption and foster care, kids need to be empowered to decide how they want to respond. W.I.S.E. Up! helps children and teens choose what they want to share about their story, if anything. The program teaches an important tool that children can use as soon as others begin to notice differences about their family. For children in transracial or transcultural families, these intrusive questions can begin as early as age three: “Why don’t you look like your mom?” For others, the questions come later: “Why were you adopted?” and “Where are your real parents?” When the questions begin, W.I.S.E. Up! helps with the answers.
Training Format:

Training sessions will include hands-on activities for the children’s group.

Training sessions will include a lecture, education, and participant discussion for the parent group.

Training Objectives:

1. To raise awareness of the unique issues that adoptive and foster families face

2. To equip foster and adoptive families to handle these situations

Upon completion of this summit, the participant will be able to:

1. Discuss the impact of societal views of adoption and foster care and how to use curriculum to feel empowered

2. Describe what W.I.S.E. UP! stands for and apply it to answering questions they encounter about their families
