During this time of isolation, nearly everyone is experiencing some level of grief and loss. For our kids from hard places, this is another layer of loss. We will discuss these layers of loss, how to adjust our expectations, and how to encourage healthy expressions of grief. From Joseph and his coat of many colors to Jesus weeping over Lazarus, the Bible has many examples of how to walk through grief with hope. As our dear mentor, Dr. Karyn Purvis, warns, “…children who do not process their losses and histories will have high rates of mental illness later in life, but ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.’” Let’s help our kids and ourselves learn to be comforted and walk towards hope.
