Location: Dubuque

Sue and her husband enjoy opening their home to others, and their Host Homes mentee can expect to become a member of a large and loving family.

Sue has decades of experience serving as a social worker. She has been a caseworker, counselor, executive, and advocate, serving individuals with disabilities or brain health issues throughout her career. She works from home during the week and after work, Sue and her husband enjoy eating dinner together, playing cribbage, watching TV, or working on projects around the house. The perfect fit for Sue’s home would be an individual who would enjoy independent time during the day, and Sue is able to transport them to any and all activities of interest.

Their home includes two dogs who are both calm and enjoy cuddles. In their free time, the family likes going to Dubuque Fighting Saints games during hockey season or catching high school football games in the fall. The family sometimes attends church, and Sue would be open to occasionally attending a church of her mentee’s preference.

Sue’s home is 150 years old and near downtown Dubuque, complete with a view of the Mississippi River! It includes five bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus a front porch and swing where the family likes to spend their time. They enjoy gardening, and their mentee is welcome to have their own flower or vegetable bed to care for. Sue’s Host Homes mentee would have their own bedroom and sitting room, giving them a good mix of opportunities to spend time with Sue and her husband or have more independent time. Their home is open to a male or female mentee. They would prefer a non-smoking mentee, however a smoking area is available outside, if needed.

In her free time, Sue likes doing home improvement projects, crocheting, and other crafts. Her family has a membership to a local gym that would also be available to her mentee. She enjoys spending time with her five grown kids and grandkids on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and once a week, the family likes to try a new recipe together. A message from Sue to her Host Homes mentee: “We want to make you feel so welcome here, so please let us know what you need and how you are feeling. I bet it’s really difficult moving into someone’s home and making it your home. We will work to make you feel at home and provide you with whatever you need.”
