Child Care Program

Immigrant and Refugee Community Services

For many parents who arrive in the U.S. as refugees, it is difficult to find quality child care. Families are adjusting to American life and may feel hesitant leaving their child with a stranger who doesn’t speak their language, or they may not be able to afford child care. LSI’s Child Care program trains former refugees to start their own in-home child care businesses, which benefit more families in the refugee community.

Program Partially Funded by United Way of Central Iowa

When T. arrived in the U.S., she did not speak English. It kept her from getting a job, and she had no formal education in her home country of Bhutan. She applied to LSI’s Child Care program. Since completing the program, T. has started her own in-home business and provides care for a fellow former refugee, allowing that mother to help support her family. T.’s English has steadily improved and she is proud that she recently passed her citizenship exam.

Participation open to Immigrants, Refugees, or those with limited English proficiency.
