Dear friends of LSI,
The year 2022 was a time of growth and innovation, learning how to better serve our community.
In 2022, LSI expanded programs and services across the state to be able to reach more vulnerable populations and to help them on their paths to success.
LSI received a grant to help fund our Trauma Informed Care Program in the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Waterloo. This program provides individual and group therapy for Iowa youth, to help them deal with their trauma and work through it in a productive way.
Our Clinical Services team had an outstanding year in 2022, serving 1,146 clients for a total of 14,669 therapy sessions across the state. In addition, our team opened a new location for in-person therapy sessions in Vinton, Iowa, and is looking to expand therapy services in Des Moines in 2023. As always, virtual therapy sessions remain available in all 99 counties in Iowa.
Our Early Childhood Services received a grant to help fund expansion of our Healthy Families America program in Plymouth and Cherokee counties. This program is a nationally-recognized, evidence-based home visiting program that helps build nurturing, safe and secure relationships between parents and children.
Last year marked the 10-year anniversary of our Immigrant and Refugee Community Services Child Care Program. This program has helped over 200 child care providers start their own in-home child care business, which then benefits even more families in the refugee community.

Early Childhood HOPES Program
A Young Mother’s Journey to Success
LSI’s HOPES program provides support to parents of children pre-birth through age five. The program focuses on supporting families with infant care, parenting, child development, links to community resources and many other aspects of parenting.
LSI’s HOPES program offers services in 29 counties all across Iowa.
Accomplishing a goal is often not a sprint, but a marathon. Such is the case for Katie* who found the LSI HOPES Home Visiting program in 2017 when she was pregnant and living in a homeless shelter.
Jaime*, Katie’s LSI home visitor, started working with her, meeting twice a week. Jaime helped Katie create a plan for reaching her two ultimate goals: maintain sobriety and regain custody of her two older children, whom she lost because of her struggles with alcoholism.
With Katie’s goals in mind, the LSI home visitor helped her set small, tangible goals to set her up on her path to success. For starters, Katie wanted to maintain a healthy pregnancy and to be able to support her newborn baby. Jaime provided education and training during their weekly sessions. Once she reached this goal, Katie’s next step was to find adequate housing for herself and her baby.
Due to her inability to read, Katie’s home visitor helped her navigate rental websites, read housing applications and understand lease agreements. This support allowed Katie to find a safe home for her and her baby, with the hopes of regaining custody of her other two children.
Next, Katie wanted to get her driver’s license. Since she was unable to read, Jaime scheduled time out of her own work week to read and audio record the driver’s manual so Katie could successfully prepare for the exam, the test and obtain her driver’s license.
After four years of participating in the program and achieving all the goals she and Jaime set for her, Katie was able to accomplish her ultimate goal of maintaining her sobriety and regaining custody of her children. The family now lives together in a safe, happy home.

Katie’s LSI’s home visitor says she learned so much from working with this family and walking alongside them on their journey. “I learned to support Katie’s independence and to empower her by encouraging her to try and to only provide support where it was needed,” she explains.

Foster Care and Adoption
A Family United in Love and Faith
LSI’s Foster Care and Adoption services help Iowa families become licensed for foster care and approved for adoption, assisting families through the licensing process and supporting them throughout their placement, extending into post-adoption services. These services reach families in 30 western Iowa counties including major cities like Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Storm Lake, and surrounding areas.
After raising their four children, Jeff and Mindy Schechinger felt compelled through their strong faith to open their loving home to children in need of a safe, nurturing environment.
They attended resource family training sessions through LSI, and shortly after becoming certified foster parents, Mindy and Jeff fostered and then adopted two brothers in March of 2021 to ensure the boys would be raised in the same home.
Soon after, Mindy and Jeff accepted the foster placement of the boys’ two sisters. It was important to them to keep the group of four siblings together, so they finalized the adoption of the boys’ two sisters in June of 2022.
Even with four adopted siblings to keep them busy, the Schechingers knew there were more children in need of a loving home, so they continued to maintain their foster care and adoption license.
Early this year, they again opened their home and hearts to a young boy who is eligible for adoption. They hope to officially add him to their family through adoption this spring, resulting in a home where the children range in age from 4 to 16 years old and come with different backgrounds and challenges.
Their days are filled with church engagements, homework, extracurricular activities and appointments. They have many animals including chickens, goats, dogs and cats. Jeff, Mindy and their children also enjoy family camping trips and being on the water.
When time allows, Mindy and Jeff enjoy taking the younger children on trips to visit their adult children, so they can all share new experiences as a family. And, they continue to work in their community to advocate and spread awareness about fostering and adoption.
LSI is proud to walk alongside families, like the Schechingers, as they continue to grow their family and create a safe, happy home for their children. Even with all of the different backgrounds, ages, and individual personalities, the Schechingers come together as one family united in their love for each other and in their love for Christ.

Juvenile Detention
Setting Iowa Youth up for Success
Shelly was recognized at the LSI 2022 “myWHY” awards for her work at the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center. These awards go to LSI team members who live and promote LSI’s mission, core values and “myWHY” culture, and go above and beyond their jobs to support their community.
Advocating for her clients is one way that Shelly Blanchard, an LSI therapist, works to support and find the best possible treatment plan for the youth at the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Waterloo.
For the adolescents, the detention center acts as a bridge between court and their next placement – whether that is a residential treatment facility, the State Training School, a foster home, or someplace else. While the youth are at the center, staff, like Shelly, provide them with education and resources to help set them up for success in their next placement.
In sharing about her experience working with youth at the center, Shelly expressed there is one client in particular she has enjoyed working with and has seen the positive impact LSI’s services have had on him. “I’ve learned so much from working with this 15-year-old at the Juvenile Detention Center,” said Shelly. “He has made so much progress with expressing his anger in a more positive way and becoming more open to sharing about his trauma.”
The teen is currently in the care of the Iowa Department of Human Services because his adoptive parents have terminated their parental rights. He has spent many months on and off over the past year at the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center while waiting to be placed in a treatment facility.
“Since he started working with Shelly, I’ve noticed a ton of positive changes,” said Shauna Krush, the adolescent’s Juvenile Court Officer.
“He appears to be more stable and resilient because he knows he has constant in-house support. Also, he is happier during phone calls and even cracks a few jokes!”
Through the Trauma Informed Care program at the center, LSI staff work with the teens by completing trauma assessments on each of them and providing a summary to their juvenile court officers. The LSI staff also facilitate both individual and group therapy sessions with the teens to help them deal with their trauma and work through it in a productive way.
Specifically, to the adolescent in this story, Shelly works with him twice a week for individual therapy, once a week for group therapy and has had 2-4 sessions of neurofeedback a week over the past several months. “His neurofeedback sessions are used to help his brain function at the best level possible,” said Shelly. “Since starting these sessions, he has been less angry, less aggressive and is sleeping much better.”
“All of his progress was possible because of Shelly’s one-on-one support of him and the way she advocates for him,” expressed Shauna. “There is no doubt that her efforts have made a significant difference in the life of this young person.”
