People with refugee status are people of courage, strength and hope. As defined by international law, a refugee is someone forced to leave his or her home country because of persecution based on race, ethnicity, religion, social group or political opinion.

Many individuals of refugee status have seen war, brutal violence and the loss of friends and family members. Many have waited in refugee camps decades before being resettled.

When these individuals cannot return home, they may be resettled to a third country. People with refugee status do not have a choice in where they are resettled.

LSI’s refugee services in Des Moines help these individuals build self-sufficiency for their new lives here in Iowa.
